Dr Peter Elyanu Is a Ugandan physician, and public health expert, with over 2o years experience leading programs and research in infectious diseases, vaccination, and Health system strengthening. He currently serves the Director of Global Health Security at the Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation in Uganda. In this role, Dr Elyanu oversees a broad portfolio, including pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, antimicrobial resistance, vaccination and health systems strengthening. He works closely with the government of Uganda, stakeholders and bi-lateral partners to champion innovation, sustainable and equitable solution for building a pandemic prepared and resilient primary health care. He is a member of the Scientific Program Committee for the International Conference on Public Health in Africa and currently chairs the Scientific Program Committee Track on Pandemic resilience and health systems preparedness.
Prior to this role, Dr Elyanu served as Director of Research at Baylor College of Medicine children’s Foundation Uganda, where he established high impact research collaborations and partnerships. He continues to be PI to several research studies including HIV drug clinical trials and COVID-19 vaccine trials where he coordinates multiple sites in Uganda. Dr Elyanu also led the pediatric and Adolescent HIV/AIDS program in the Uganda ministry of health where he provided strategic and technical leadership for the national scale-up of pediatric and adolescent HIV care and treatment in Uganda. In this role he pioneered several initiatives that led to expansion of pediatric and adolescent HIV treatment services from 245 to over 1,400 health facilities and increased ART coverage in children from 18% in 2010 to 60% in between 2010 and 2014. Dr Elyanu is currently a member of the continental working group on sickle cell in Africa, a group convened by Africa CDC.
He holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, USA, Master of Medicine and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.
